November 25, 2025What to Do When Your Health Is Failing — And You Want to Save Your Own Life
If You Can’t Do It for Yourself, Do It for Someone You Love
Sometimes, when your health is falling apart, you can’t find the motivation to do it for yourself.
So do it for someone else.
If you can’t do it for you — do it for your kids.
If you can’t do it for your kids — do it for your grandkids.
And if you can’t do it for them — do it for the people who still want you here.
Because once your health fails, it becomes the only thing that matters.
And by then, it’s usually too late.
The Hard Truth About My Dad (and a Lot of Men Like Him)
I don’t like sharing personal stuff like this. But this one matters.
My dad is 60. He’s an incredible man — tough, loyal, funny, and the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back.
But he’s also obese, has rheumatoid arthritis, a 30-year smoking history, and decades of heavy drinking.
He’s an athlete at heart, but his body doesn’t show it anymore.
And lately, he’s said, “I feel awful about how I look and how I’m living.”
I’m scared for him.
And if you see your dad, brother, or yourself in this story — you should be too.
Because when you hit your 50s or 60s and your health collapses, you don’t lose years — you lose freedom.
You lose energy. Independence. Time with the people who love you most.
If I Were in My Dad’s Body, Here’s Exactly What I’d Do
If I could swap brains with him for six months, here’s how I’d start turning his life around — step by step.
Step 0: Get the Full Picture — Don’t Skip the Blood Work
Before doing anything else, you need to know what’s going on inside your body.
Ask your doctor (or an integrative or naturopathic practitioner) for a comprehensive metabolic and lipid panel and include these additional markers:
- Fasting insulin: high levels signal insulin resistance. According to Dr. Casey Means (Good Energy), the optimal fasting insulin range is roughly 2–5 mIU/L; higher numbers suggest your metabolism is under strain.
- Triglyceride-to-HDL ratio (TG/HDL-C): divide your triglycerides by your HDL cholesterol. This simple number strongly predicts insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk — lower is better.
- Other key markers: fasting glucose, HbA1c, liver enzymes (AST/ALT), waist circumference, and visceral fat (measured via DEXA).
👉 Ask for this:
“I’d like a full metabolic panel and lipid profile, plus fasting insulin and a TG/HDL ratio. I want to know if I’m becoming insulin-resistant before it turns into diabetes.”
When you find out where you stand, you shift from guessing to knowing.
That knowledge can save your life.
Pair it with a DEXA scan right at the start to see your body-fat percentage, lean mass, bone density, and visceral fat.
Then repeat it in 6–12 months. In between, weigh yourself daily and use tape-measure waist circumference measurements weekly to track progress.
Step 1: Outsource Your Nutrition Immediately
If you have the means, hire a meal-prep service for the next 90 days.
High-protein meals only — 30 – 50 g of protein per serving.
Then go nuclear on your kitchen.
Throw out every snack, drink, or “just in case” food that doesn’t serve the mission.
You’re not “trying to eat better.”
You’re saving your life.
Step 2: Talk to Your Doctor About a GLP-1 Option
This isn’t medical advice — but for people in crisis, a GLP-1 medication (like Semaglutide – Ozempic or Wegovy – or Tirzepatide – Mounjaro or Zepbound) can be a lifesaver when paired with a proper nutrition plan.
Two decades of data show strong weight-loss outcomes and consistent safety in diabetic populations.
Yes, the long-term effects are still being studied — but the short-term risk of doing nothing is far more certain: heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s.
To put it in perspective:
- Carrying excessive visceral fat can nearly double your risk of death from any cause — men with high visceral fat have been shown to have ~1.8× higher all-cause mortality.
- For every 10 cm increase in waist circumference, the risk of dying early climbs by ~11 %, independent of body weight.
That’s how dangerous metabolic dysfunction really is.
So if you’re 60, carrying 30–40 % body fat with early insulin resistance, you’re not playing for “an extra couple of decades.” You’re fighting for the last good one — the decade where you can still live independently, travel, play golf, and meet your grandkids without pain or fear.
Step 3: Supplement Like It Matters
Start with two basics that actually work:
- Creatine monohydrate (Creapure): 5 g / day, up to 20 g if tolerated.
- Whey protein isolate: enough to help reach 1 g of protein per pound of LEAN body weight (total weight – fat mass = lean weight)
These alone improve muscle retention, recovery, energy, and even brain function.
Step 4: Hire a Real Trainer — Not a Hobbyist
Find a career professional — someone who’s trained people for decades and understands joint issues, pain history, and injury prevention.
Train 2–3 times per week, full-body, compound lifts, 45–60 minutes each session.
This isn’t about abs or PRs.
It’s about moving well, building durability, and making your body capable again.
Step 5: Track Everything — Because Awareness Changes Behavior
Buy two simple tools:
- Garmin watch: tracks steps, heart rate, and VO₂ max (your true measure of fitness).
- WHOOP band: tracks recovery and sleep — watch what happens to your recovery after a night of drinking.
Then track:
- Daily weight
- Weekly waist measurement
- Monthly body-composition scan (InBody or BodPod)
When you see the numbers, you’ll stop lying to yourself.
The Real Battle Isn’t Against Age — It’s Against Apathy
If your health is in crisis, you don’t have the luxury of “waiting until things slow down.”
You either take action now — or wait until your body forces the issue.
Most people don’t fail because they lack knowledge; they fail because they underestimate what’s at stake.
You don’t have to be perfect.
You just have to start caring again.
Because if you can’t do it for yourself…
Do it for the people who still need you here.
