The Holiday Health Paradox: Why Waiting Until January Is the Worst Thing You Can Do
December 23, 2025In the early 1970s, researcher Lee N. Robins studied U.S. soldiers who used heroin while serving in Vietnam War. She found something surprising: although about 19 % of those soldiers reported heroin dependence while in Vietnam, only around 1 % of the entire group were still dependent a year later. Heroin Study of US Veterans That’s a dramatic drop.
What changed? The environment changed. The soldiers left a war zone filled with trauma, trauma-triggers, easy access, and normalized drug use — and returned home to a very different setting. The result: the addiction disappeared for most.
Now imagine this: you’re not dealing with war, but you are dealing with a different kind of trap, the trap of ultra-processed foods.
The Environment Is the Hidden Enemy
Every day, you’re surrounded by foods that weren’t alive. Snacks that glow under bright lights, meals on demand, instant gratification. These are not innocent—they’re built to get you hooked.
Big food companies studied exactly what we eat and how fast we eat it. They found the perfect mix of fat + salt + sugar + crunch that our brains love. When you eat one bag of chips, you might feel full, but your body doesn’t know how to stop. That bag becomes two. That two becomes three. And pretty soon you’re asking, “Why do I feel heavy, tired, unfocused?”
You might be the type of high-performing professional (lawyer, engineer, investment pro, doctor) who values efficiency, expertise and results. You want clear thinking, strong body, confident presence. But this “junk food environment” is silently stealing that from you.
What the Research Shows
Let’s break down some of the real numbers (with simple explanations):
- ~35 % of soldiers in Vietnam tried heroin while deployed. Bet On It+1
- ~19 % of those soldiers became dependent (addicted) to heroin during service. Bet On It+1
- After returning home, only ~1 % of the full sample were still dependent a year later. Bet On It
In typical addiction studies (outside war zones) relapse rates can exceed 60 % within a year. But here? It dropped to nearly 1 %. That’s more than 60× better than the usual.
Why? Because the environment changed.
Why This Matters for YOU
If you’re reading this, you care about:
- Looking better (leaner, stronger, confident in your body)
- Feeling better (more energy, less brain fog, sharper in meetings)
- Being better (better recovery, better sleep, better decisions)
Here’s how ultra-processed foods screw that up:
- They lead to afternoon crashes, making you less sharp in your most important hours.
- They cause belly fat and slow recovery — while you’re working hard on training.
- They mess with your hormones and energy systems, so you feel older than you are.
- They rob you of the clarity, the “edge”, the presence that your role demands.
But guess what? Just like those soldiers, you don’t need more willpower. You need a better environment.
The Simple Fix: Eat Food That Was Once Alive
Here’s the rule:
If it was grown, raised, or made with simple, natural ingredients — it belongs on your plate.
That means:
- Grown in the ground: vegetables, fruits, potatoes, beans, and lentils.
- Hung on a tree or came from a seed: fruit, nuts, seeds, and whole grains like oats, rice, and quinoa.
- Part of an animal with a heartbeat: meat, poultry, fish, eggs.
- Naturally produced by animals: milk, yogurt, cheese — ideally in their simplest form.
These are all real, whole foods. They’re the ones your body recognizes, can digest easily, and uses to build strength, energy, and focus.
What we’re avoiding are the foods that are industrial creations: built for profit, not health.
If it takes a factory and a marketing team to convince you it’s food, it probably isn’t helping you.
When you do this:
- You feel full with fewer calories
- You get the nutrients your body actually needs
- You stop craving junk because you’re nourished
- Your energy becomes your ally again, not your enemy
- You look and feel like the “best version” of yourself again
If the food was made in a factory, wrapped in shiny plastic, or has an ingredient list you can’t pronounce—you might want to skip it for a bit to see the difference in how you feel.
Your 21-Day Whole Food Experiment
Here’s a practical way to test this for you:
- Clean out your kitchen and pantry. Remove the ultra-processed foods. Give them away, donate them, or finish them first.
- For 21 days, eat whole meals three times a day + healthy snacks. Use a meal-prep service if you like (in Calgary something like Fit Kitchen works—no affiliation, just good food).
- Track how you feel: energy, focus, mood, recovery from training.
- Compare it to how you felt when you were eating the “junk” version.
After 21 days you’ll start to feel the difference. You’ll see the better version of yourself coming back.
